The Programme was and started by the HSPN in 1999, and is aimed at schools of all education levels. Students chose some small green corner of their urban area and their environmental awareness and study its fauna and flora of the urban environment. In so doing they become more aware of natural values.
The programme is aimed at young people (aged 6 to 16) as well as at organizations and groups who want to help protect the green refuges in their neighbourhoods. It has been approved by the Ministry of Education (Ministerial decision, Φ7/ΕΠ/60884/88845/Δ7/21-07-2021). All educational material is given free. Interested groups should apply to the HSPN.
The goal of the programme is to promote the study of the flora, fauna and geology of a neighbourhood, and to discover the relationship between these factors and their general role in the eco-system. Using educational materials available, and employing the suggested activities of the programme, the study groups inquire and learn about their “green” neighbourhoods and the ways to protect them. As well they try to develop cooperation with the green services of the Municipality and with other environmental groups such as the Forestry Service
Every year these groups present the results of their activities, and the best of these are given prizes, and are presented on the website.
22 schools took part in the programme in 2020-2021, and 161 schools have been awarded since the inception of the programme.
The coordinators are the HSPN and the 2nd PEKES of Attica.
